Is solar worth it for a small business
It is worth it when power consumption is high and concentrated during daylight hours, which is the case for most businesses. But what usually fails is not the installation, it is the lack of follow-up: without monitoring, the owner never knows how much was generated or when the investment pays for itself.
The three variables that decide it
- How much you consume. The higher the bill, the faster the payback. Below a certain consumption, the investment takes too long to make sense.
- When you consume. A business that operates during the day uses generation at the moment it happens, which is the best case. A night time business depends on how exported energy is credited.
- What tariff you pay. Savings are calculated against what you pay per kilowatt hour today, not against a national average.
One region specific note for Patagonia: across much of it, wind is as important a design factor as sun. Mounting structures have to be engineered for strong gusts, and that makes installation more expensive than in other areas. It is worth accounting for from the start rather than discovering it as a surprise.
The most expensive mistake: installing without measuring
The solar conversation usually ends the day the installation is finished. And that is where the real problem starts.

The usual causes of a performance drop are mundane and perfectly fixable: dirty panels, new shade that was not there before, or a faulty inverter. The problem is not that they happen, it is finding out late.
How to calculate payback without fooling yourself
The honest calculation has four variables, and it is worth doing with your own numbers rather than accepting the vendor spreadsheet:
- Total investment, including wind reinforced structure, installation, paperwork and grid connection.
- Estimated annual generation for your location and your roof's real orientation, not the theoretical ideal.
- The share you will self-consume, which depends on your time of day profile. What you do not consume is worth less than what you do.
- Your real tariff per kilowatt hour, taxes included.
That gives you an estimated period. Then monitoring tells you what the real period was, which is the only number that matters.
